What We Care For!
DRC: REPORT 15-16 May 2022 | BRUSSELS, BELGIUM
KEYNOTE SPEAKER:
Diaspora Adapting to Taliban takeover of Afghanistan
Bashir Eskandari, President, European-Global Civil Society Organization (EGCSO) & Afghans and Catalans Cultural Association
Bashir Eskandari shared his experience of mobi- lization after the Taliban takeover with ACCA in Spain and EGCSO at the European level. Before the fall of the government, he took part in writing letters to the UN secretary-General to protect the achievements of two decades in the peace nego- tiations in Afghanistan and sent official letters
to the relevant organizations regarding the pro- blems of Afghan refugees in Greece and Turkey. However, after the collapse of the former Afghan government, “using our political relations with the Spanish government, we carried out large-scale activities for Afghans at risk in Afghanistan and Afghan asylum seekers”. Like many diaspora orga- nizations across Europe, his organization played
an important role in bringing vulnerable people
to Spain – by submitting lists of vulnerable people to the central government and expressing the pro- blems of the Afghans at risk – including with the Foreign Minister Mr. José Manuel Albares. His or- ganization has also managed to provide university education scholarships to Afghan refugee students.
Bashir Eskandari concluded by stating that achie- ving true justice and social and economic progress will only be possible if the new generation of citi- zens and the Afghan diaspora see the richness of ethnic, cultural, and linguistic diversity in society and distances themselves from the beliefs and ideas that promote ethnic hegemony.
